FAQs
What Supplies will I need?
If you happen to have an Ipad, bring it! These are great for looking up chords, songs, videos, and taking notes during your visits. If not, phones are great too! Guitars are usually the most portable and versatile instrument to bring with you, but percussion or other instruments are welcome as well. No other supplies required, but feel free to get creative about what you bring with you.
How do the Finances of this program work?
This program is currently free for the facilities it is taking place in. To that end, artist payments and administration for this program come entirely from nonprofit grants and community donations to Sound Affects.
Background Checks?
Because this program involves lots of one-on-one time with residents and in facilities, Sound Affects is required to run a background check for participating artists at no expense to the artists. Background checks are a one-time requirement and are not needed for returning artists to this program.
Is this Music Therapy?
Nope! While a Music Therapist’s work with special populations also involves one-to-one sessions and visits, their involvement with their clients is more clinical, goal-oriented, and as implied, therapeutic. Sound Affects’ Artist in Residence program is meant to exist in spaces that are not currently being supported by Music Therapists and revolves more around a “Community Music” approach. Artists in Residence are skilled musicians who can also act as listeners, collaborators, and bridges to a more vibrant and inclusive community and creative support system for isolated older adults.
